Desk Editor

An exciting opportunity to join a small, creative, fast-paced non-fiction publishing team, working on commercial books across a range of subjects from history, popular science and lifestyle to sport, puzzles, humour and craft.

Key responsibilities

  • Project managing titles from delivery through to publication, including structural edits.
  • Providing thoughtful and responsive author care throughout the editorial process and acting as the main editorial point of contact.
  • Hiring and briefing all copy-editors, proofreaders and indexers as per agreed budgets and company style guides.
  • Briefing and liaising with designers, illustrators and typesetters as per agreed budgets and briefs.
  • Collating and keying in corrections using InDesign.
  • Completing final pre-print checks.
  • Writing cover copy where needed.

Skills required:

  • Keen eye for detail and minimum of two years’ editorial experience in a trade publishing house, ideally working on non-fiction.
  • Confident project manager, able to work on time and on budget.
  • Impressive knowledge of language and grammar.
  • Excellent proofreading and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of book production process.
  • Good communication skills, with experience of working in a team and liaising with authors and freelancers.
  • Proficient in InDesign.
  • Experience working on full-colour books if possible.

Flexible hours: could be full or part-time dependent on candidate availability. Minimum three days a week, at our offices just off Clapham High Street. Editorial tests to be completed as part of the interview process.
