Publishing Assistant

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Publishing Assistant who can work effectively in a fast-moving and demanding environment, across the editorial and design departments. The successful candidate will have publishing experience and can provide support to the team in all aspects of the book production process.

Buster Books loves to create books for curious and creative children. Our list is brimming with titles to spark the imagination and encourage exploration. Our books will satisfy the keenest of puzzle masters, budding artists and the deepest of thinkers. Above all, they are to be enjoyed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the editorial and design departments.
  • Sending weekly material updates to the sales department and organising material for book fairs and sales trips.
  • Making reprint corrections to InDesign files and maintaining the reprint corrections spreadsheet.
  • Writing copy for Advance Information (AI) sheets, liaising with the editorial team on AI updates, and circulating a monthly AI report to the sales team.
  • Researching comp titles on Nielsen and running Nielsen reports.
  • Helping to design and check sales catalogues.
  • Design administrative duties, including updating and keeping track of the design deadline list, archiving InDesign files for finished books, maintaining the reuse material spreadsheet, and generating barcodes.
  • Biblio duties, including launching titles, raising ISBNs, checking ISBNs and prices before books go to print, and ensuring metadata is kept up to date.
  • Administration duties, including filing invoices and contracts, dealing with general enquiries and permissions requests, taking meeting minutes, liaising with other departments on an ad-hoc basis, and organising author/illustrator copies (including foreign edition send-outs).
  • General office maintenance, including shelving file copies, keeping the shelves organised, replenishing kitchen supplies/stationery and communicating any building maintenance issues.

The applicant will need to have the right to live and work in the UK.

Experience

For this role we are looking for:

  • Experience of working in a publishing environment.
  • A meticulous eye for detail.
  • Creativity, adaptability and enthusiasm.
  • A keen interest in both editorial and design.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks, while remaining calm under pressure.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and external contacts.
  • A genuine passion for and knowledge of children’s books
  • A good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, Office 365 including Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Knowledge or previous use of Biblio would be an advantage.

  • 20 days holiday a year, rising by a day a year to 25 days pro rata plus 4 days Christmas company holiday

Salary: Up to £24,000 dependent on experience

Office Administrator

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and organised Office Administrator to join our busy London office.

Key Responsibilities

As well as general receptionist duties, responsibilities include producing sales material, answering enquiries, helping with book fair organisation and generally liaising between departments to ensure the smooth running of the company. This is a varied and busy role that requires a bright, dynamic applicant who is happy multi-tasking and confident using Microsoft Excel and Word.

Minimum 6 months office experience preferred. The applicant will need to have the right to live and work in the UK.
